BCIT News reports on BLPA Nest Box Program

On Sunday, January 21, a hardy group of volunteers braved the elements and headed out around Burnaby Lake for our annual nest box servicing. This year, BCIT News Journalism student Tanushree Pillai was there to capture the day`s activities.

Tanu also tweeted details of the process.

We still have more boxes around the Lake to service. Once all of them are completed, we hope to have results of our data collections by March 2018.

Thanks Tanushree for coming out and to our fantastic volunteers.

Bird Impact Reduction Day

Today is Bird Impact Reduction Day.  It is important to bring attention to this now as the birds are very active. Our friends at the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC are tending to a steady influx of birds from window strikes (over 500 in 2016). They range from temporary shock to broken wings and keels (breast bones).

From Bird Studies Canada’s site, here it what to do if you find a bird that had impacted a window and is stunned or injured:

  • Gently place the bird in a paper bag or small cardboard box with air holes
  • Roll clean tissues or paper towels into a donut shape and place around the bird
  • Never feed the bird or give it water
  • Place in a quiet, dark, secure area
  • After an hour, take the box or bag to an area away from other buildings and windows, and release the bird
  • If the bird is unable to fly off or if there are visible signs of injury, contact Wildlife Rescue Association of BC at 5216 Glencarin Drive, Burnaby, (604) 526-7275.

* Although handling birds poses very little risk to human health, wearing gloves is recommended.

Weather Conditions and the BLPA Nest Box Program

The Burnaby Lake Park Association is still planning to hold the 2017 Nest Box servicing work parties but as you have noticed the weather has not cooperated with us so far this year. The long range forecast calls for a very cold week capped with snow and rain on the weekend.

The area around the lake is treacherous with many of the nest boxes inaccessible for us to safely hold the work parties so were are:

  • January 15 (10 am – 1 pm) at the Rowing Pavilion – POSTPONED – Our volunteer coordinator will be in contact with you if you are on the mailing list when we have a new date set
  • January 22 (10 am – 1 pm) at the Nature House (at Piper Street Entrance)  – GOING AHEAD AS SCHEDULED – This will depend on the accessibility of the boxes out on the marshy area and, of course, the weather! We may change the location if it becomes necessary.

Please stay tuned for any further updates.
Contact our volunteer coordinator directly by e-mail: info@burnabylakepark.ca and get added to the email list; a message will be sent out once we have plans finalized.
