The Burnaby Lake Park Association Logo

BLPA-with-oval

The Burnaby Lake Park Association logo features the head of a Wood duck (Aix sponsa) drake (male). It is considered one of the most beautiful birds due to its stunning colouring. According to our records, the first nest boxes for Wood Ducks were put up at Burnaby Lake in 1976. As cavity nesters, i.e., birds who would build their nests in tree holes, the nest boxes provided a safe place for hens (female ducks) to lay their eggs when there weren’t enough of those trees available in nature. Over the years, they proved to be a success resulting in Burnaby Lake having the largest resident (year round) population of Wood ducks in Metro Vancouver.

The logo was designed by one of the BLPA’s longest serving volunteers, Derek Tan, a graphic designer, who grew up in the neighbourhood and has been helping the BLPA since joining the Weedbusters in 2004. Thank you, Derek!
