Nest Box Servicing 2018

Help service the nest boxes around Burnaby Lake that provide homes for wood ducks, swallows, chickadees, and flying squirrels. Collect valuable data that helps us to understand how these species are doing in our park as well as making any adjustments to increase nesting success.

It is important that you dress for the weather, and waterproof footwear is highly recommended. We’ll provide the gloves, tools and snacks.

Ages 8+

IMPORTANT: Please keep an eye on our website or social media for any change of plans due to the weather. The forecast is for a similar winter so we may need to adjust due to conditions. You can also sign up with our volunteer coordinator at info@burnabylakepark.ca and get put on the list to receive any updates by email.

Records show the first nest boxes put up by the BLPA’s predecessor, the Burnaby Outdoor Education Association, in 1974. Over the years, founding member Joe Sadowski has continually refined and improved the design of them so they suit our We(s)t Coast weather.

“In the late 1960s, Burnaby was running into problems with disposal of garbage. So the idea was that they would use this area as a garbage dump. Our group became very active politically; our plan was to preserve this lake. Our group became known as the Burnaby Lake Park Association. I’ve been volunteering in this park for about 45 years. It makes me feel good to see how the park is being used. I could not imagine it being a garbage dump. It is a very pleasant surprise to see the number of people using it.”

An invitation to a special event to discover more

Learn about the community activists who worked to clean up and preserve the aquatic environment of Burnaby Lake. Community members are invited to bring their own stories and memories to share. This talk is presented by Rebeca Salas. Rebeca Salas is a museum registrar at the Burnaby Village Museum. As an MA candidate in geography at Simon Fraser University, Rebeca is interested in the relationship between memory and place.
