January Stewardship Opportunities

Are any of these activities on your goals for the new year?

  • Get outside
  • Meet new people
  • Get exercise
  • Volunteer
  • Learn about the nature around you
  • Actively take part in environmental stewardship
  • Give back to your community

We have some opportunities coming up that can tick these things off your list!

With the milder winter and no snow on the ground so far – we’re jumping right into our Weedbusters invasive species removal program at the Burnaby Lake Nature House. You will be able to meet other people who care and actively take care of the environment and contirbute to the ongoing stewardship of Burnaby Lake Regional Park.

No experience necessary – training and snacks provided!

These work parties will take place from 11 am to 2 pm.

For detailed information and to register (no drop ins allowed), sign up at the links above.

* Please note, work parties will take place as long as weather conditions allow. Our Coordinator will contact you if any there are changes.

See you in the park! 🌿

November Stewardship Opportunities

We hope you have been enjoying the fall. We are hosting more stewardship events in November!

The first 2 events will meet at the Lenson Garage located on 9146 Avalon Avenue.
On November 12th, we will be laying down cardboard/coffee bags over the grass and then covering it with dirt and spreading a seed mix of wildflowers. Then on November 18th, volunteers will be building a fence to protect the Wildflower Meadow. Check here for detailed directions, including transit, to get to this location.

The second set of 2 events are at the Burnaby Lake Nature House located at 4519 Piper Avenue. We will be digging up blackberry roots behind the Nature House and covering the ground with weed cloth to dissuade birds from nesting at this location in the spring which would allow us to continue stewardship work in the area according to provincial and federal regulations. There might be an opportunity to prepare the Butterfly Garden for the winter.

BLPA featured on CBC Our Vancouver

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to speak with host Gloria Macarenko of CBC Our Vancouver. A recent episode featured parks and the importance of nature in our lives. It was great to be able to tell her about the birds, wildlife and the community of volunteers who help protect Burnaby Lake Regional Park.

This segment was filmed in February when show was on hiatus during the Olympics. It was a grey day, but always lots to see and hear, whatever the weather.

Longtime part goers may recall some of the arhcival photos they shared and can see how the park has changed from the original footage.
